The Castletroy branch of CCE is the youngest branch in the county. Founded in September 2009, the branch was a response to the needs of a growing community in the Castletroy and Monaleen areas on the outskirts of Limerick city. Very quickly we established regular flute, whistle, fiddle, guitar, bodhran, accordion, concertina, dance, and song teaching in the Don Bosco Centre, this along with the normal band and group classes.
The branch is built around the classes taught by the wonderfully talented Majella Bartley. She has built up a team of teachers including Liam Guiney, Michelle Mulcahy, Tom Connery, Eamonn Costello, Niall Carey, Roisin Ni Galloglaidh, Sean O’Meara and Niall Keegan. Our newest classes are Irish language Comhrá classes provided by Eamonn Costello from Connemara, a PhD student at the Irish World Academy and wonderful box player.
Currently the branch has approx 200 members and 90 students. These young people (and some not so young!) have done exceptionally well in Limerick, Munster and All Ireland competitions. Most notably, the branch won the All Ireland Plearacha competition in 2011 and was runner-up in 2012, both held in the Clasac Centre in Dublin.
However, most important for the branch is a strong ethos of community engagement and involvement. This involves performances in local old people’s homes, Milford Hospice, as part of religious services, monthly session in the Black Swan, concerts in Kilmurry Church and fundraising performances in the local shopping centres. In the spirit of such an ethos the branch has developed strong ties with local institutions and organisations such as the University, Milford Church, Milford, Monaleen and Gael Scoil National Schools, Monaleen GAA and the Kilmurry Heritage Committee. Are most recent success was the hosting of Fleadh Cheoil Luimnigh 2012, at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick.
